Assignment I

Q1. What are the major features of India’s foreign policy? Explain.

India's foreign policy has evolved over the decades since its independence in 1947. While its core principles have remained relatively consistent, its application and priorities have shifted according to global geopolitical changes and domestic developments. Here are some of the major features of India's foreign policy:

1. Non-alignment: Introduced by India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, non-alignment meant that India did not align itself with any of the major power blocs during the Cold War. Instead, it pursued an independent foreign policy. Today, while the Cold War context is no longer relevant, the principle underscores India's desire to maintain strategic autonomy in international affairs.

2. Panchsheel (Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence): These principles, which were initially articulated in an agreement with China in the 1950s, have come to underpin India's approach to international relations. They are:

·       Mutual respect for each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

·       Mutual non-aggression.

·       Mutual non-interference in each other's internal affairs.

·       Equality and cooperation for mutual benefit.

·       Peaceful coexistence.

3. Neighborhood First: India gives priority to its immediate neighbors in South Asia. The idea is to foster close and friendly relations, ensure stability, and enhance economic cooperation with neighboring countries.

4. Act East Policy: Initially started as the "Look East Policy" in the 1990s, this has been intensified in recent years. The policy aims to cultivate extensive economic and strategic relations with the nations of Southeast Asia and East Asia.

5. Multipolarity: India supports the emergence of a multipolar world where multiple powers play significant roles. This is seen as a way to ensure a more democratic and balanced international system.

6. Nuclear Policy: India has a self-imposed no first use policy regarding nuclear weapons, emphasizing its commitment to use nuclear capabilities primarily as a deterrence. It also advocates for global disarmament.

7. South-South Cooperation: India emphasizes collaboration between developing nations, both bilaterally and through institutions like the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa).

8. Strong Bilateral Relations: India has sought to cultivate strong bilateral relations with key global players including the USA, Russia, China, and countries in the European Union, among others.

9. Focus on Multilateralism: India actively participates in various international organizations and believes in multilateral approaches to global issues. It's a vocal advocate for reforms in institutions like the United Nations, especially the UN Security Council.

10. Combating Terrorism: India's foreign policy emphasizes the need for global cooperation to combat terrorism. Given its own experiences with cross-border terrorism, it seeks a concerted international effort against this menace.

11. Focus on Economic Diplomacy: In recent years, India's foreign policy has placed significant emphasis on boosting trade ties, attracting foreign investments, and forging technology and innovation partnerships.

These features provide an overarching view, but the nuances of India's foreign policy evolve based on domestic considerations and changes in the global environment.
